5 rhythms in NYC?

I'll be in NYC Sun, 5/10 - Wed, 5/13 and would like to find a 5 Rhythms drop-in class/dance. I've picked up in this tribe that there may be a regular drop-in class somewhere on Tuesday nights? Can someone provide details?

I'm coming to NYC on business from my hometown just above Seattle, WA, so I'd love to dance the rhythms East Coast style!

Thanks!
Kristi

I'm going to be in LA next weekend for a yoga conference. It's at the LAX Marriot. I'd love to escape in the evenings and dance. Any suggestions on where to go for good evening dancing?

Thanks

Are there any 5 Rhythms or similar dance events happening in the Atlanta area? I live, dance in Sacramento and am visiting family in this area for the hols. I have found a Contact Improv group so far.

Thanks,

Thanx in advance!

Hi,
I am a frequenter of Sweat your Prayers who happens to be doing a research project on the shifting of Self (emotional and spiritual) when the body moves.
I am looking for volunteers who would be willing to be interviewed to talk on the subject. It should take only about one hour of your time.
Thank you and Namaste,

Five Rhythms Workshop Coming to Washington, DC!

Washington, DC has been without quality ecstatic dance for too long!

Tammy Burstein is coming for a weekend for
both an intensive workshop and a intro workshop.

March 14-16 2008!

Bethesda, MD
Introductory Workshop – Saturday Evening
Intensive Workshop – Friday Night through Sunday Afternoon

Whether you’ve danced the 5Rhythms® for years, meant to for years, or just found out about this dynamic, cathartic, joyful, insightful, wild Movement Meditation Practice of Gabrielle Roth's this workshop will ground us all in the basics, open us to the possibilities, and challenge us to take our practice deeper and further from wherever we start.

The 5Rhythms® is a living, breathing, evolving practice; one that we revisit over and over to expand our understanding of the basics and to integrate the changes that both the practice and we are experiencing as we transform into ever more expansive and compassionate beings. It is a wonderful way to experience a deep and loving connection to self, to the other, and to the many communities to which we each belong. Moving with attention to the 5Rhythms® of Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness leads each of us into a greater awareness of the vastness of soul - all through the action of our many unique and heart-full dances.

The key to unlocking our soul's door is the body. Each of us is blessed with the ultimate meditation tool, our body. This amazing teacher provides constant enlightenment with every breath and every step. In Body Wave we give ourselves the time to pay attention to our bodies, to the parts where we release and the parts where we resist, where we revolt and where we remove, where we reveal and where we revel. In this workshop we'll shake loose the building blocks our bodies and rebuild and reinvent ourselves from the feet up.

Over the course of the weekend we will dance and be danced - surrendering to wave after wave of our body's wisdom. Facilitated by Tammy Burstein, we will be led by the 5Rhythms® in waking up the body and waking up to the soul. We will deepen and strengthen our understanding of the 5Rhythms® as we explore five physical gateways (feet, hips, head, hands, and breath) that inform and illuminate our practice.

We hope you will join us, newcomer, old-timer, beginner mind or devoted practitioner, to move a little further into the mystery.

Slow dreamy music to give away

Hi

I have recently bought via download the 4 "CDs" of Christopher of the Wolves from Magnatunes:

www.magnatunes.com/artists/wolves

As a way of promoting their music Magnatunes gives each buyer the possibility to distribute each "CD" via download to three other friends, so now I can give each of the 4 CDs three times (though the one called Samadhi has already gone!):

www.magnatunes.com/info/give

If you think you might like it (it's flowy, drummy and dreamy) please listen to it and send me a message, I use this music a lot to dance-trance.

I will send the link and password to download it to the first 9 people that request it.

Please specify which one of the last 3 you prefer, if that one is not available any more I can send you the next one.

(oh, and please don't pass the downloading details to anyone else as I think Magnatunes does a great job promoting wonderful artists!)

Do you ever feel you got hit by a Mack truck a day or two after dancing the rhythms? I last danced Tuesday and this morning my whole body has been tight and achy.

I wonder sometimes if I put too much into my dancing -- I don't really dance *moderately* -- but FR is the only place I don't have to hold back, so why do so there too?

Maybe I'm just getting old.

Or perhaps I *process* so much on a somatic level that my body just has to detox whatever crap I've been holding in.
5 Rhythms in Jamaica / Miami

Hi All,

I have just joined Tribe.com.

I regularly took part in 5 Rhythms workshops in Dublin, Ireland up till last November. I have since moved to Kingston, Jamaica, and really REALLY need to move in the 5 Rhythms again. I'm currently so stuck in Staccatto (enclosed in boundaries right now) that I want to move in other rhythms but finding it hard at the moment.

Does anyone know of any 5 Rhythm workshops that are going on in Jamaica, Miami or anywhere else in the Caribbean.

Any info anyone has will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all.

Room for rent short term in Brooklyn, NY

Hi tribe,

I have a great room in my home for someone who needs a place to rest his/her head between travels, or while in NYC. Ideally it's for February and March but I am open to other time frames, shorter or longer. The room is 11x16, with wood floors, high ceiling, and 2 windows that you can see actual trees out of. We would share the kitchen and bath.

Rent is $800/month, including utilities, cable internet, and cable tv if you want it. The neighborhood is diverse and unpretentious, the Newkirk Ave stop on the Q/B train. The Flatbush Food Co-op and a cool hip political coffee shop are a few blocks away.

I would love to find a five rhythms kindred to live here. Incense and Goddess friendly, alcohol and drugs not so much. Clean in the common spaces, and respectful of the space. Feet on the ground a must.

My e-mail is dancing-myprayers@usa.net.

Today is both my girlfriend's birthday and Halloween (every year we walk the Park Slope Halloween Parade with our daughter), so of course I'm not going to the Tuesday night Waves class, but that's all I really want to do.

Oh well. May you all have a good freak out. I'll dance the rhythms of family life.

5 Rhythms in Atlanta / Miami

Other than the upcoming workshop in Atlanta, does anyone know if there is anything else happening 5R in the Southeast?

Does Atlanta have a regular Sweat?

Any Miami dancers out there?

Why do you dance the rhythms?

I often leave class feeling vaguely disappointed, and I realize it's because I come with high expectations. I've identified many reasons why I religiously dance the Five Rhythms every Tuesday night, in no particular order:
1) to exercise, keep in shape
2) to let out all of my held-back feelings in the orgiastic, Dionysian, Plutonic release that is chaos
3) to express myself creatively through movement
4) to make friends
5) to connect sensually, intimately with people outside of my relationship in a safe, boundaried space

I'm curious to hear what other Tribe members desire to get from this practice.

On & Off the Dancefloor...

Hi all you Beautiful Dancers!!!
I am happy to discover this tribe.
I LOVE the FIVE RHYTHMS!!!!
Dancing at my weekly 5 Rhythms class is the main space of time in every week when I truly feel like me. When I am dancing I feel like I know what is *truth,* I feel FREE, and able to completely express myself.
My wish is that the way I feel when I am dancing the wave, can also be the way I feel in the rest of my life... I just love my self, my life, and being alive, while I am dancing... the rest of the time it is more of a challenge to know and express myself...

Anyone have that experience... of noticing that they do apply the freedom/feeling of dancing into the rest of their day to day life? Or noticing a deep and grounded connection with self and life when dancing, and long to experience that off the dancefloor too?

How do you integrate the Rhythms into your daily life?

I've been doing this work for a little over two years on a weekly (at least) basis, and I still find it a challenge to bring the dance into my daily routine. For example, how do I Flow in my office? How do I experience Stillness during times of anxiety?

I've been occasionally dancing at home in my living room, and wanted to elicit suggestions for building my music library. I've just been listening to an itunes radio station under electronica called "DI.fm Goa-Psy Trance" which really facilitates "letting go."

Hi y'all. I was in Portland OR last week and unfortunately there were no 5R classes there but somebody told me about Soul Motion. I heard that the founder Vin Martin (sp?) studied with Gabrielle, and there is a similar feel to the classes. But I'm definitely looking forward to returning to my regular Tuesday class.

I can't believe I just found this tribe! I have been doing Gabrielles work for over ten years for a long time in NYC then here on the island with a small group, in SAn FRan and LA when I visit out there, at Esalen in a month long work study, in Ireland when traveling.... wherever I go I check to see if there is anyone teaching there for classes. It has been integral to my life healing path and flowing into flexibility. I have learned to shapeshift and go quickly into trance. What a great journey! Hope tomeet you all on it soon. I will be heading across the country in a week to spend the winter in California. If anyone is teaching in a state along the mid to Northern route can you let me know so I can stop along the way and shake it all up?
Blessings, Beth

Mine is Chaos. Letting go for me is not only about body, but also about social self-consciousness. This is the only rhythm in which I am so focused on my inward experience that it is difficult to pay attention to others (other than making sure I don't hit anyone).
